I ask him 2 questions :
1. Does it consume your time and refrain you doing thing you should ? Answer No
2. Does it replace the achievement you make in other field ? Research / hospital admistrarion / career development ? Answers is no .
So you don't have problem I say -- then he change the subject to a mangement issue : change was influence by " overheard something that he can't be sure it's fake or truth ? " and the bias result to emotions - and emotion is what he need to address now - the cure ?
1. Be aware of indirect communication : filter the 3rd person / analysis the messenger come with a good intention or not .
2. Don't down grade yourself and think as your subordinate .
3. Learn leadership is power of influence , well blend 2 power : role & position : charisma and personality .
The rest will be fine .. As usual, chang take care of my physical condition , I look after his psychological well being
